The Legend of the Christmas Spider (A German Legend)

On Christmas Eve, a long time ago, a gentle mother was busily cleaning the house for the most wonderful day of the year... Christmas day, not a speck of dust was left. Even the spiders had been banished from their cozy corner on the ceiling. They had fled to the farthest corner of the attic. The Christmas tree was beautifully decorated. The poor spiders were frantic, for they could not see the tree, nor be present for Santa's impending visit. Then the oldest and wisest spider suggested that perhaps they could wait until everyone went to bed and then get a closer look.
When the house was dark and silent, the spiders crept out of their hiding place. When they neared the Christmas tree, they were delighted with the beauty of it. The spiders crept all over the tree, up and down, over the branches and twigs and saw every one of the pretty things.
The spiders loved the Christmas tree. All night long they danced in the branches, leaving them covered with spider webs. When Santa Claus came with the gifts for the children, he saw the tree covered in spider webs, and smiled to see how happy the spiders were, but he knew the mother, who had worked so hard to make everything perfect, would not be pleased when she saw what the spiders had done.
With love in his heart and a smile on his lips, Santa reached out and gently touched the spider webs. The spider webs started to sparkle and shine! They had all turned into sparkling, shimmering silver and gold.
Ever since this happened, people have hung tinsel on their Christmas trees. It has also become a custom to include a spider among the decorations on the Christmas tree.
The Legend of the Christmas Spider (A Ukrainian Christmas Legend)

There was a very poor family who lived in tiny cabin in the wood. Christmas had arrived and they were so poor and had barely any money for gifts. The children cried themselves to sleep not having any decorations or Christmas tree and the mother felt so awful that she put on her ragged shawl and holey boots and while the children slept, she went out into the forest to cut down a tree. Coming back into the house she realized that in her haste she forgot that there was really nothing to put on the tree. So she hung a few ribbons and put on the few candles she could find and hoped that when the children awoke the next morning they would love what she did. But unnoticed in the tree was a spider who had made her home for the winter. She watched the mother cry as she added the few meager decorations she possessed. When the mother, exhausted, went to bed for the night, the spider came out and knew what she had to do. She wove her silk from top to bottom, going left and right all around the tree, encasing it in beautiful silken webs. Since the tree had been brought in from the icy cold, into the warmth of the cabin, drops of water formed on the webs as the spider wove. The condensation continued, until the whole tree was covered in what appeared to be sparkling diamond like jewels trapped in the silk of the spider web, when lit by the candles the mother had placed among the branches. The spider grew so tired from all her work, she fell asleep in one of her webs. The next morning when the children and the mother woke, they found the most beautiful sight that their eyes could behold. Before them stood a glittering masterpiece, more beautiful than any tree they had ever seen. That is the miracle of the Christmas Spider, and that is why in Ukrainian households there is always a spider in a web included in the tree decorations.
The Legend of the Spider in Your Christmas Tree

Spiders seem to figure a great deal in legends. Perhaps it’s not surprising then, that one of the most beautiful legends surrounding the Christmas story tells of a spider who saved the life of the infant Jesus.
This very lovely children’s tale tells how the Holy Family stumbled wearily into a dark, damp cave on their way to Egypt. It was a cold, freezing night – so cold that the ground was carpeted with a white hoar-frost.
Tired as they were, Mary and Joseph busied themselves trying to make the cave as warm as they could for their new-born child. But it was all to no avail. It was impossible to light a fire as the wind blew mercilessly into the cave. Soon the baby began to cry and awoke a sleeping spider.
The spider was moved when he saw Jesus and decided that somehow he must do something to help Mary and Joseph. So, patiently, he began to spin a web across the entrance of the cave to make a kind of curtain which would shield
them from the searing wind.
It was hard work and the spider was near exhaustion when it was finished. He had only just completed his work however, when a detachment of Herod’s soldiers approached the cave. Blood was on their swords and hate in their hearts. Their mission was to kill the infant Jesus.
The spider trembled with fear as he heard them stop outside the cave and prepare to burst in and search it. He looked at the now sleeping Jesus and prayed with all his might for a miracle.
He was not disappointed. The soldiers were just about to enter the cave when the captain noticed the slender web, covered with white hoar-frost, stretched across the entrance. He laughed hideously and cursed his men for their ignorance. “Can’t you see the spider’s web, you idiots?” he cried. “It’s completely unbroken. There can’t possibly be anyone in the cave, otherwise they would have certainly torn the web.”
And so the soldiers went on their way and the infant Jesus slept peacefully that night because the little spider had given up his night’s sleep to spin his web.
Any gift given to Jesus is never forgotten. And that, so they say, is why each year we cover our Christmas trees with tinsel: so that the shiny streamers will remind us of the unknown spider whose frost-covered web saved the life of the infant King.
